Acrylic Painting Exercise: Primary Colors

Posted on

This acrylic painting exercise uses 3 primary colors: cyan blue, yellow, and magenta. I also add titanium white and matte medium to my palette.  I first laid out the paint and premixed some colors.

The first layer is just random dark marks, The second layer is all colors mixed and randomly painted on the canvas so I can get a feel for what mixes I like most. The third layer, I covered it all with a light coating of white which I blotted and scraped back in places. For the fourth layer, I decided on 3 color mixes that I like and have begun to overlay those as a background. Previous color layers and marks come through in areas. Again, I have no real plan at this point…. nothing sacred, just playing with the paint. Something always evolves from this process. In the 6th and final layer, I added some black. This is a very loose, fast painting.  I tried not to think too much about it.
